Carrying a bubbling glass of pop and a food tray, Callie curled up on the couch in her great room, curving her legs beneath her as she tucked in for dinner and a couple hours of television before turning in for the night. She perched the tray on her legs, preparing to enjoy a steaming plate of Swedish meatballs along with a serving of fresh fruit.

Silence and peace enveloped her mind as she bowed her head over a blessing; then she clicked on the TV and channel surfed, but there wasn’t much being broadcast that captured her attention. She speared some noodles and sliced into a meatball. While she chewed, she reached for a pocket-sized, daily devotional she kept handy on the end table and opened to the day’s date. There, she came upon a reflection that she read twice—then a third time, her heart thumping in reaction.

Beautifully Broken

At times, when life pushes us to the brink of what we think we can endure, God shows Himself in the most powerful and unexpected ways imaginable. Consider a time when you felt most afraid, most anxious and troubled. Consider it from the context of where you are now and reflect on the ways God moved through your brokenness to reveal goodness, a beauty and joy that you never would have expected to find.

The accompanying scripture verse came from the book of Romans, verses twenty-three and twenty-four: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and all are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

The interlude felt as though it had been created just for her, and it laid on her heart the exchange she had shared with Luke just a few nights ago. Pieces of a horrible weight had fallen from her shoulders when she told him about her miscarriage, and how close she had come to having an abortion.

Still, doubts lingered; a sordid past haunted.

There remained in her spirit a jagged piece of glass that cut and burned, refusing her peace and a belief in all-out cleanliness from sin. She had spent years trying to atone for her past by living life from the fullness of a reformed heart. She tried hard to always embrace an authentic faith.

Was that enough?

The answer was no, spelled out clearly in the daily meditation she had just perused. Everyone fell short. Everyone failed. Everyone sinned. Everyone was tainted and unworthy of God’s glory. But His love, she wanted desperately to believe, would override everything else—just as Scripture decreed.

Sighing, still unsettled, Callie continued to eat, and continued to ponder. Just as she polished off the last meatball, her nearby cellphone vibrated to life, lighting with a name and number that caused her smile to bloom.

Luke West.

She engaged the call. “How’s my favorite EMT?”

“I am completely and totally stoked! Ask me why.”

Callie giggled and blinked at his abundance of delighted fervor. Luke was just what she needed right now. The love in her heart continued to build.
